Text Box: October 25 Program
Commander Marsha Florian was introduced by Chuck Tellbuescher. In July 2000 she was placed in charge of the Airport Bureau at Sky Harbor. There are over 24,000 employees—a city within a city—and 36Million traveling passengers who use the airport facilities. Commander Florian indicated that Sky Harbor is the 5th busiest airport in the US and the 9th busiest in the world and that officers serving in the police bureau at the airport need to be experts in airport security and FAA regulations. She indicated that there was no way that security would have caught the hijackers since the items they carried (box cutters and small knifes) were not banned by security at that time. They obviously are now! She talked briefly about security measures in place since September 11. When checking baggage, travelers will be asked if they have any items in their purse or on their person which would not pass through security screening—individuals will have the opportunity to place those items in their suitcases at that time.
Commander Florian was the first police officer to join Club 100 and brought us up to date on Officer Schechterle who is continuing to make slow but steady progress following his serious burn accident last March. He represents the worst burn case ever to survive in the County Burn Unit. Fortunately, doctors have learned a great deal that will help future burn victims. She told uplifting tales about this 34-year-old officer’s ordeal and his amazing courage in continuing to fight his ongoing battle to recover. Raffle tickets for an electric car and electric bike were sold to interested Rotarians. Proceeds will benefit Officer Schechterle. She indicated that since she serves on the Club 100 Board with Dean Synan that she will make sure he is “fined” at the next board meeting since he wasn’t present at PxWest today! Way to go Commander Florian!

Rotarians Making Up:

Zero, zip, none, nada!  We only had 17 Rotarians present today and one guest.

Guests:Jim Winstel from Northwest Mutual Life was guest of Chuck Tellbuescher and a potential future Rotarian.  We’re not sure after today’s meeting whether we’ll see hide nor hair of him ever again!  It seems that he’d fit right in because he told a joke about Kiwanas being an Indian word for “I want to be a Rotarian.”

Our guest speaker drew the lucky numbers for Gene Mills and Sharon Stoltz (again) and neither was fortunate enough to draw the joker.  The pot rolls over.
